Using replacement animation and a smartphone camera, this whimsical short took home the SPFF16 prize

🏆WINNER Smart Phone Film Festival (SPFF16)

Hide & Squeak is a charming and surreal stop-motion short about a clever little mouse navigating an oversized world in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Created specifically for the Smart Phone Film Festival, the entire film was shot using a Nexus 5 smartphone—proving you don’t need fancy gear to tell a great story. The animation was built using replacement stop-motion techniques, with each expressive mouse pose crafted by hand.

Post-production and edit were completed in Adobe After Effects, blending practical textures with digital polish. Hide & Squeak is a playful experiment in lo-fi filmmaking, imagination, and DIY animation magic.
