NSW Conversion Practices Ban
Anti-Discrimination NSW
We were engaged by Anti-Discrimination NSW to create an animated explainer about the NSW Conversion Practices Ban Act 2024, which came into effect in April 2025. Aimed primarily at LGBTQA communities, the campaign helps raise awareness of the ban on harmful change and suppression (or “conversion”) practices across the state, and clearly outlines people’s rights under the new legislation.
The Approach
Our role was to adapt an existing animation originally created for VEOHRC, updating the content to reflect NSW law and aligning it with Anti-Discrimination NSW’s brand. We focused on keeping the information clear, accurate, and easy to understand, while maintaining a tone that felt respectful and affirming.
Accessibility was a core part of the approach. Alongside the English version, we produced fully translated versions in Greek, Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Each version included updated on-screen text, captions, and voiceover performed by native-speaking artists. This project also marked our first Auslan (Australian Sign Language) translation, performed by a Deaf LGBTQA translator, helping ensure the information was accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.
Visual Style
The animation uses a calm, friendly visual style designed to communicate sensitive information without fear or judgment. The original animation style was carefully retained, with updates to colour, typography, and layout to align with Anti-Discrimination NSW’s visual identity. Clear on-screen text and considered pacing support comprehension across multiple languages and formats.
The Result
The project was created by an entirely queer team, with voiceover by non-binary actor Mantshologane Maile, recorded at Studio Under the Stairs an LGBTQA-run studio that shares our values of care, inclusion, and community.
We’re proud to have contributed to a public awareness campaign that supports LGBTQA safety, autonomy, and dignity, and reflects what’s possible when accessibility and lived experience are centred from the start.
