Change/Suppression Parenting Guides
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commisson
Families and caregivers play a critical role in shaping how young people understand their sexuality and gender. Clear, calm information can make a meaningful difference particularly when addressing the harms caused by conversion practices.
Knuckles Animation Studio partnered with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to continue supporting their ongoing work explaining the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021, a vital piece of legislation that protects LGBTQA+ people in Victoria from harmful conversion practices.
Together, we developed a suite of accessible resources designed for families, caregivers, and the broader community.
The Approach
The primary challenge of this project was communicating complex legal information in a way that felt clear, supportive, and non-confrontational for families navigating sensitive conversations.
Two short, animated videos were created to speak directly to parents and families of queer and trans young people. Each 30-second animation draws inspiration from the iconic Life. Be in it. campaign, using warm, vintage-style illustration to communicate messages of acceptance, love, and support. The focus was on reassurance and reinforcing that families are not alone, and that help and guidance are available.
Alongside the animations, we produced a companion booklet, Talking with Your Child About Sexuality and Gender Identity, building on the characters developed in the original explainer animation. The booklet was designed as a practical, approachable guide for parents seeking to better understand and support their children.
To support broader community understanding, we also designed two factsheets: Conversion Practices: An Explainer and How to Make a Report about Conversion Practices, providing clear, easy-to-share information for community members, educators, and service providers.
Visual Style
The visual language for this project was designed to feel welcoming, calm, and familiar. The illustrations use a warm colour palette and soft textures to create an atmosphere of care and reassurance.
Characters were developed to feel relatable and non-threatening, allowing families to see themselves reflected without feeling confronted. This visual approach was applied consistently across animations, print materials, and factsheets to ensure cohesion and accessibility.
The Result
The final suite of resources delivers clear, compassionate information about the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021 in a way that feels supportive rather than punitive. By combining animation, print resources, and practical guidance, the materials help families and communities better understand the law and their role in protecting young people. The booklet and fact sheets are available as free downloads on VEOHRC's website.
