Project Overview
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment approached us with a unique challenge: to support internal training around new technologies and procedures.
They wanted a series of short animations featuring local animals in familiar workplace scenarios, designed to sit alongside their training sessions. We collaborated closely with their team to bring this idea to life, drawing stylistic inspiration from BoJack Horseman and iconic New South Wales wildlife.
The Approach
Following a staff survey, the client selected their favourite NSW animals and work environments to form the cast of the series:
Koala, Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo, Barking Owl, Jewelled Gecko, Platypus, Giant Dragonfly, Blue Grouper and the Bellinger River Snapping Turtle
These characters were placed into a range of animated scenarios, spanning both office-based and field work. This included meetings, research, planning, solar panel installation, wind turbine data review, water testing, and regenerative planting.
Each scenario was designed to reflect real workflows while introducing new technologies and procedures in a clear and engaging way.
Visual Style
The illustrations use a clean, 2D vector style with strong line work. While each animal and environment includes realistic detail, the overall tone leans into playfulness through bold colour, pattern, and character-driven design.
Animations were built using simple looping sequences, allowing them to be used flexibly across training formats and durations.
The Result
The final series delivers a distinctive and engaging visual language, built around a bespoke cast of characters. The animations have become a charming and practical internal resource that the team actively enjoys using.
By reflecting the real work and culture of the Delivery Office, the series supports more engaging, accessible training through an employee-informed approach.
