Animations that make safety training fun

Animations that make safety training fun

A construction industry client approached Knuckles to create a series of animated safety videos for use across their new starters training programs. The challenge was introducing essential safety procedures in a way that felt clear, approachable, and relevant for young workers entering the trades, many of whom have little to no on-site experience.

The Approach

Knuckles worked closely with subject matter experts to develop a training series grounded in real-world procedures and familiar workplace language.

The project resulted in four video series covering key areas of construction safety:

·                Introduction to site safety

·                Working with mobile equipment

·                Working at heights

·                Elevated work platforms

Each series was designed as a flexible, on-demand resource that could be used during inductions or revisited as needed.

We delivered end-to-end services, including:

·                Concept development and script refinement

·                A detailed visual system featuring original characters, safety icons, work equipment, and environments

·                Storyboarding and animation production

·                Complete audio production, including voice-over artists, sound design, and music

·                Captioned videos to support accessibility

Visual Style

The visual style centres on fun and original 2D characters in combination with safety icons, recognisable construction equipment and environments. This approach keeps the tone friendly and engaging, while remaining grounded in real-world safety scenarios.

Some scenes and visual elements were designed as reusable building blocks across the series, supporting each topic’s original content. Visual systems like looping diagrams, recurring characters, and shared environments are reused where appropriate, helping reinforce critical controls and company-specific safety procedures through familiarity and repetition.

To explore how things can go wrong, selected sequences use playful chibi-style versions of the characters. This allows potential risks to be communicated clearly, without relying on frightening or graphic imagery.

 The Result

The final series is used across Australia and New Zealand to support training for new starters entering the trades, providing a clear and accessible introduction to workplace safety.
